In the statement made on the company’s website, it was stated that the focus would be on cultural representation and amplifying the voices of underrepresented filmmakers around the world, and that it also aims to provide a safe haven for “excluded voices striving for creative resistance” and to educate audiences to resist injustice.

The first project of “Watermelon Pictures”, defined by Hadid as “an independent Palestinian film distribution, production and financing organization”, will be a documentary called “Walled Off”.

The documentary will tell the story of the Walled Off Hotel, located in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, with a view of the “Separation Wall”, where the interior design as well as the murals were created by the world-famous British street artist Banksy.

The documentary, written and directed by Vin Arfuso, an American filmmaker of Palestinian and Italian origin, and planned to shed light on the lives of Palestinians living in the region, was co-produced by the Hadids’ brother, Anwar Hadid.

Other producers of the documentary include Kweku Mandela, Nelson Mandela’s grandson, and Roger Waters, one of the founders of Pink Floyd.
