Actress Maggie Smith is born in Ilford, Essex, England. With an extensive, varied career on stage, film, and television, spanning over 67 years, Smith has appeared in more than 50 films, and is one of Britain’s most recognizable actresses. She played Mother Superior in Disney’s Touchstone comedies “Sister Act” (1992) and “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” (1993). Smith also voiced Lady Bluebury (leader of the Blue gnomes and Gnomeo’s widowed mother) in the 2011 animated romantic comedy “Gnomeo & Juliet” – a Touchstone production distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Fans of the “Harry Potter” films know her best as Minerva McGonagall. Sporadically appearing on television throughout her career, she gained newfound attention and international fame for her role as Violet Crawley in the British period drama “Downton Abbey” (2010–2015).
