In 2018, the scientific world was astonished when the staff of the Kujukushima Zoo and Botanical Garden in Nagasaki, Japan, announced that a monkey named Momo was pregnant . The monkey was living alone in a confined space, making the pregnancy extremely surprising.

While it was supposed to be easy enough to get a DNA test to find out who the father was and how this happened, a post on their Instagram page explained why this couldn’t actually happen.

They said: “Everyone wants to know that ‘who the father’ is has not been determined yet because we did not do a DNA test, but we found out that his gender is male.”

However, two years later, staff managed to capture the baby for DNA testing. “They said, ‘It took us two years to figure this out because we couldn’t get close enough to collect samples, she was very protective of her child.’

And it turned out that the baby monkey ‘s father was from the cage next door called Itoh. They also revealed that the 34-year-old gibbon basically uses what we humans call the Glory Hole to impregnate the female, meaning he makes love through a small hole between their separate enclosures.

“We think it is very likely that they mated through a hole on one of the days when Itoh was in the exhibit,” zoo chief Jun Yamano told Vice. It is hoped that the trio will eventually live together as a real family , but Jun added:

“They need to get used to each other first, but I hope they can live together as one family.”

The saga was revealed late last year, but there have been no updates on the monkey family since then . It is also not yet known what the baby monkey’s name is.
