Jolanda Fun decided to end her life with euthanasia

34-year-old Jolanda Fun, who lives in the Netherlands, made a decision that will surprise readers on her birthday.

Fun, who is stated to be physically healthy, will end his life by euthanasia on his birthday.

Stating that she has already prepared invitations for her own funeral, Jolanda Fun told the Sunday Times that she “hopes to be the last person in the Netherlands to be euthanized due to psychiatric problems.”

Jolanda Fun said that although she has family, friends and a small dog, life is always painful for her, and that she suffers from an eating disorder, recurrent depression and learning disabilities.

On the other hand, Zoraya ter Beek, a 28-year-old depression patient living in the Netherlands, also announced that she resorted to euthanasia.

Only one in every 10 people who request euthanasia for psychiatric reasons is carried out.

How is euthanasia practiced in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands allows euthanasia under the law that came into force in 2002.

The application takes place in 5 steps as follows:

Step 1: People with unbearable pain and no hope of recovery or whose Alzheimer’s disease is rapidly progressing must apply for euthanasia in person. The application is made to the family doctor. 80 percent of applications for euthanasia are made by advanced cancer patients.

Step 2: The application is examined by the family physician. It is thoroughly investigated whether the patient really volunteers for euthanasia and whether there is hope for recovery. The patient is informed in detail about euthanasia by the physician.

Step 3: After the first two steps are completed, the physician who examines the application evaluates the situation with an independent group of physicians. If the evaluation is positive, we move on to the next stage.

Step 4: The patient, whose euthanasia request is accepted, is given a high dose of an anesthetic drug called “Thiopental”. This drug, which puts the patient into a coma in a short time, is followed by a muscle relaxant injection that completely stops breathing.

Step 5: The Euthanasia Commission closes the file by examining in detail whether all stages have been fulfilled and whether the doctors have done their job.
