Shortland Street’s new look has been widely criticized, with some longtime viewers reporting their forever hiatus on social media – but either they don’t do it or many Kiwis are returning to the show.

According to producer Oliver Driver, the ratings are at their highest in months.

“The thing about Facebook is that it usually has 600 people screaming against the wind,” he says of weeks of negative feedback on fan sites popular with viewers of New Zealand’s longest-running drama.

“They’re very vocal and really enthusiastic and they’re our super fans and we love them. But they don’t like change because they love the show exactly as it has for 30 years.”

In fact, most of the feedback has been great for the new and much rougher look.

“We’re getting good ratings and we’re strong on TVNZ+, so everything looks good for us from those aspects. And we’re getting really great feedback from a variety of players of all kinds,” says Driver.
