Why did 12-year-old Easton Johnson die?

Michigan’s close-knit community of Paw Paw is grieving the devastating loss of 12-year-old Easton “E” Johnson, who passed away unexpectedly this week. A beloved student and athlete, Easton’s sudden death shocked his family, friends and community members.

Easton was born on February 19, 2011, to parents Jimmy and Kelsie Johnson. A lifelong Paw Paw resident, he attended Paw Paw Early Elementary School, where he was known as a kind, energetic child who excelled both socially and academically.

Easton had a passion for sports, especially football, which he played locally. Coaches, teammates and family describe Easton as mature beyond his years, describing him as a natural leader and talented athlete with an infectious spirit that motivates those around him.

His death was a tragic shock to everyone who knew Easton and his family. Grief counselors were assigned to Easton’s school to provide support to students and faculty as they cope with this tremendous loss.

Members of the Paw Paw community came together to offer condolences, share memories and comfort Easton’s loved ones. Neighbors describe the Johnsons as a close-knit, community-oriented family who could often be seen cheering on Easton and his younger brother, Maverick, at local games.
